Its history

1861

Marius Étienne François Borgeaud was born on 21 September in Lausanne. He had an elder brother, Eugène, who later became a doctor, and a younger sister, Louise. The parents live on their pensions.

1880-1897

After attending the industrial school in Lausanne, he apprenticed as a banker in Marseille. He inherited his father's estate in 1889 and hardly worked at all. He squandered his assets in Paris. In 1897, he returned to Lausanne and was placed under guardianship at his own request for profligacy.

circa 1900

Upon returning to Paris, he decided to become a painter. He studied with Cormon and Humbert at the Académie de la Palette, 104 boulevard de Clichy, Montmartre.

As early as 1903

He made regular visits to several provincial towns (notably Moret-sur-Loing) to paint on the motif with his neo-impressionist colleagues.

1908

During his first trip to Brittany, he continued to paint landscapes in the style he had developed up to that point. At the same time, however, he began the series of inn and bedroom interiors that would later bring him considerable success. Over the following decade, he returned to Rochefort-en-Terre each year.

1905-1913

He exhibits regularly at the Paris Salon des Indépendants (in spring) and the Salon d'Automne.

1914

First solo exhibition at the Max Moos Gallery in Geneva. After the outbreak of war, he returned to Switzerland for several months, but returned to Paris and Brittany in 1915.

1916

He moved to 43 rue Lamarck in Paris, where he lived for the rest of his life, dividing his time between Brittany and Paris.

1917

First solo exhibition in Paris, at the Eugène Blot gallery. He repeated this the following year.

1918-1922

During the summer months, he continued to stay in Brittany, settling in the village of Le Faouët. By this time, he was in a relationship with his future wife, Madeleine Gascoin. He exhibited several times in Paris at the Galerie Druet, and the French government acquired two of his works.

1923

Stay in Audierne. He returns to Lausanne to settle his mother's estate, has her guardianship lifted and marries his partner Madeleine Gascoin in Paris in September.

1924

Exhibition in Paris at the Rodrigues-Henriques gallery. Last stay in Audierne. Marius Borgeaud dies at his Paris home on July 16.
